DO

The Designation of Origin (DO) is a geographical indication that guarantees the origin and quality of a wine that is made from certain varieties and with previously established wine, oenological and aging practices. A regulatory council of the Appellation of Origin ensures compliance with the regulations, keeps the register of winegrowers and adhered wineries, controls production and verifies the quality of vintages and wine.

DO Alella

Surely, one of the most attractive mysteries of Alella wines is their very existence, in the heart of the Maresme, the product of small vineyards, sometimes hidden from the curious gaze of visitors, who for many years have been fighting for their survival in an admirable and unequal battle against the expansion of the great urban area. This has not always been the case, as Alella wines have a long history and an important significance in Catalan winemaking. Known and loved already in Roman times, they cite Pliny and Martial as Laietan wines. Alellenc wines were, in the middle ages, the favourites in Barcelona's Cathedral, to later become one of the most exported quality wines from Catalonia around the world, with particular incidence in the overseas colonies where there was an abundant population of Catalans.

DO Catalunya

The distinctiveness of the DO Catalunya in a bottle is a guarantee of quality for the consumer. Currently, the DO Catalunya brings together the vast majority of Catalan wine-producing municipalities. Its objective is to gradually improve the quality of wines and vineyards, encouraging research and the application of the latest technologies. Consolidating, creating and innovating are basic guidelines that explain the Denomination of Origin Catalonia.

DO Cava

The DO Cava refers to quality sparkling wines made using the traditional method, undergoing a second fermentation in the bottle and with a minimum of 9 months (up to a minimum of 36 months in the most premium segment) in contact with the lees in the same bottle where this second fermentation has taken place. With more than 70% international sales, Cava is the Spanish DO that exports the most. It brings together more than 38,000 hectares of vineyards and more than 6,800 winegrowers. Its 370 associated wineries are present in more than 100 countries. The producers and processors that are part of the DO Cava work with the commitment to maintain the high quality of their products under high criteria and with a strict commitment to origin, land and sustainability. The new zoning and segmentation regulations, unanimously approved by the plenary session of the Regulatory Council in 2020, aim to value the origin and territory of Cava, as well as offer consumers maximum guarantees.

DO Conca de Barberà

The Conca de Barberà Designation of Origin, protected by its Regulatory Council, is located in the north of the province of Tarragona. The plain vertebrated by the francolí and anguera rivers is protected by the mountains that surround it, especially the Prades mountain range. The average altitude is 500 m and the soil is basically calcareous. The DO currently has 2,875 hectares of vineyards and an average production of 8,000 hl of wine.

DO Costers del Segre

The Costers del Segre Designation of Origin is a mosaic formed by seven territories distributed throughout the basin of the Segre river and the Lleida Pyrenees with the aim of grouping and providing its own entity with the viticulture of the province of Lleida. The DO has its own well-defined characteristics that differentiate it from the others, such as a privileged location of soils with calcareous composition and a marked Mediterranean climate, which has strong seasonal and daily thermal oscillations, which make it ideal for growing vines.

DO Empordà

The range of Empordà wines is very wide. The red wines are of high quality, full-bodied, well constituted and harmonious, sometimes with the nuance of careful aging. These reserve and ageing wines have very characteristic aromatic notes; They are complex, fragrant, with hints of spices, always maintaining the aromas of the fruit and the plant. Once in the mouth they express themselves fully, tasty and very pleasant.

DO Montsant

The first Spanish wine designations of origin were recognised in 1932 in the Statute of Wine promulgated by the state government, including the DO Tarragona. Within the limits of the DO Tarragona, the "Falset subzone" was differentiated, which occupied the current territory of DO Montsant. Finally, taking into account the specific characteristics of the wines and the importance of vine cultivation in the area, in 2001 the creation of the Montsant Designation of Origin was approved, which started with 28 registered wineries and today has 55.

DO Penedès

In order for a wine to be part of the Penedès Denomination of Origin, a process of qualification of the wines by the inspectors of the DO Penedès is followed, analyzing samples of all the wine items of the winery. Once analysed, these samples are tasted by the DO Penedès tasting committee, which gives each wine a score following the requirement criteria of the DO.  This committee is made up of experts, oenologists... from the Penedès and Catalan wine worlds.

DO Pla de Bages

The fact that Bages is a land of wines is a fact. It is not clear when vines began to be cultivated in Bages, but the author of the medieval manuscript "Miracula Sancti Benedicti" interpreted that the name of the region came from Bacchus, the pagan god of wine. From Bacchus would come Bacasis and from this Bages.

DO Tarragona

The climate of the DO Tarragona and the direct influence of the sea, with a mild orography and exceptional terrain, offer us soft, fresh and typically Mediterranean wines. The DO Tarragona has several "terroirs", clearly differentiating those closest to the sea from those that are neighbors of the Ebro river.

DO Terra Alta

Terra Alta wines occupy the flat and deep parts of the dry valleys, on natural terraces, on very permeable soils, with strong and deep soils, which allow a good drainage of crops. The climate is Mediterranean with outstanding continental features. Temperatures fluctuate greatly: they fall below 0º in winter and exceed 40º in summer. The annual rainfall regime is 500 mm, a small amount that, in addition, is scarcely retained and that causes humidity to be low.
