The cultivation of apples in the Girona region originates in the fourteenth century for self-consumption and it is from the beginning of the twentieth century that its production aimed at commercialization is extended.
Apples covered under this PGI have been cultivated in accordance with integrated production standards for apples, with methods that respect human health and the environment and are collected when the state of ripeness of the fruit is adequate with the greatest care and speed possible.
The climate influenced by the proximity of the sea, with a high insolation and thermal oscillation between day and night, as well as the soils with fluvial materials and good drainage, give these apples their quality. The Protected Geographical Indication Girona Apple covers four large varieties of apples: golden, red delicious, gala and granny smith. The golden, green-yellowish, lisa skin, large caliber and white pulp, is consistent and tasty. The red delicious, red, large and consistent caliber, is slightly sweet. The gala, bicolored, medium caliber, very consistent and white pulp, is thin and slightly sweet. Granny Smith is an apple with deep green skin, large caliber, whitish pulp and a slightly acidic taste.
They are sold in the extra and first categories packaged in boxes or trays. In addition to the mentions required by current legislation, the packaging label will include the name "Poma de Girona. Protected Geographical Indication" and the logo of the geographical indication and the community symbol. They are sold in greengrocers throughout Catalonia.
In its composition there are no elements that stand out especially and, like the rest of fruits, it is mainly water, fiber, small amounts of sugar and good source of antioxidants and minerals. But the value of this fruit is the healing properties in case of gastrointestinal disorders, since it can act as an astringent or laxative depending on how it is consumed. Its antioxidant properties are due to polyphenols (quercetin) that are found in abundance in the skin, components that act beneficially on free radicals that are responsible for the oxidation of our body. So, it is a good food for those who suffer from high blood cholesterol levels. In addition, as the English say, "an apple a day, keep the doctor away" (literately, 'an apple every day, keeps the doctor away').
