The Penedès is known for the high quality of its wines, both the whites with the Xarel·lo variety in front and the Macabeo, the Parellada, La Malvasia de Sitges, etc ... and with red wines of native varieties such as Carignan, Sumoi Red, and also varieties adapted for both whites and reds.
The DO Penedès, with 2,500 hectares of vineyards, is the denomination of origin with more history and winemaking tradition in Catalonia. It extends along a large strip of territory between the sea and the mountains, halfway between Barcelona and Tarragona. The soil and climate differentiate the terroir of the DO Penedès in 10 areas marked by a unique character, ranging from the sea to more than 800 meters of altitude. The star variety is Xarel·lo for white wines, although the quality of red wines is largely unknown and they occupy 35% of the total bottles produced under its seal. The arrival of wine in the Penedès dates back to the Phoenician civilization, the first civilization to see the potential of this territory. Two millennia later, these lands are still a quality brand that many look for when choosing a good wine. Its history is the history of the land, agriculture and life. A history now hidden beneath the earth, and thanks to the work at the site of Font de la Canya, in Avinyonet del Penedès, an archaeological find as precious as the bust of the Goddess Demeter of the third century BC was discovered, with a headdress ornamented with details of ears and grapes, which testified to the importance of wine in these lands since time immemorial. In addition, it is in these lands where charred and mineralized seeds from the VII era BC were found. C. which gave more signs that the vineyard in the Penedès is no coincidence, but is the hallmark of their wines with history. History, however, is not the only thing that makes these lands special: the philosophy when making their wines gives a special touch to the DO Penedès that makes it able to bear the seal of excellent quality. The quality that surrounds the DO Penedès brand is not only a consequence of its tradition and antiquity, but also of its capacity for innovation and keeping it current. When you have lived 2,700 years of history behind you, it is easy to get lost in time and fall into an anachronistic void. Having to find the perfect point in the balance between being present and innovative, without forgetting the legacy and where it comes from, is a most complicated task. But the DO Penedès has managed to unite past and present while keeping intact its careful tradition, which has allowed them to wear a stamp of heritage, tradition and prestige with a recognition that breaks borders. We must value the effort made by today's winegrowers and wineries for sustainability, the environment, adaptation to climate change and their fight to reverse the situation, as well as the production of organic wines. The wines of the DO Penedès, are wines of proximity, sustainable, quality and origin.
Young wines predominate, with great aromatic qualities. The whites are pleasant, with moderate alcohol content, aroma and fine taste due to their little body. They are made with Xarel·lo and Parellada vineyards, along with others such as Macabeo, Chardonnay and Riesling. Its alcohol content is 9º and 13º. It is recommended to consume them in the same year of being bottled. The rosés, with a graduation of 10º-13º, are fragrant and fruity, and it is recommended to take them even faster than the white ones. The needle wines of between 10º and 13º are remarkable, which enjoy an intense and persistent aroma and a great reputation. The red wines, made with Red Grenache, Monastrell, Tempranillo, Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon, are soft, complex, elegant, silky and balanced, and improve over time. This wine must have a minimum duration of six months for white, rosé and needle wines, and fifteen months for red wines, with an initial oak bottling phase, followed by a complete bottle phase.
The wines of the DO Penedès are distributed and marketed inside and outside the Catalan lands, so they can be purchased everywhere. Its consumption is distributed throughout the territory, with a greater concentration in the coastal area between Barcelona and Tarragona, close to the production area. They are good company for all kinds of dishes and gastronomic preparations.
